Scope of role
VSL Landscapes Ltd is seeking an experienced Landscape Architect / Landscape Designer to support our construction-focused team on a contract basis. We require someone who can step in irregularly, respond to design needs at short notice, and produce or amend drawings on demand to support live construction programmes. This role is ideal for a designer who understands the realities of the New Zealand construction sector and can work collaboratively within a fast‑paced, solutions‑driven environment, translating design intent into practical, cost‑effective construction outcomes.
You will work closely with our Managing Director and project teams to refine concepts, prepare documentation, and ensure designs align with practical construction methodologies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead landscape design development for commercial, civil, infrastructure and public-realm projects (non-residential focus)
- Prepare landscape design concepts, developed designs, detail drawings and construction-ready documentation
- Produce plans, details, and supporting material for council consenting processes
- Conduct client-facing site visits
- Collaborate with internal teams to refine designs and incorporate suggested changes efficiently
- Participate in design reviews and be open to feedback, suggestions and iterative improvement
- Provide practical, buildable design solutions aligned with New Zealand construction standards
- Identify value-engineering opportunities, including cost-saving measures, alternative materials, and construction efficiencies without compromising design quality
- Collaborate closely with clients, consultants and contractors to ensure design intent is delivered on site
- Support project delivery with clear, accurate, and timely design outputs
- Engage with Mana Whenua, local iwi, tāngata whenua and project stakeholders where required, ensuring cultural values, identity and aspirations are appropriately reflected in landscape outcomes

Scope of role
This is a crucial role for our business in ensuring the successful execution and delivery of our commercial softscape landscaping projects. These include all areas of softscaping and the living elements of our projects such as plant layout and design, plant health and horticulture knowledge, weed management, mowing and trimming. You will have responsibility for leading and motivating the team as well as accountability that projects are completed efficiently and to the highest quality standards.
This is a hands-on role that encompasses leadership and supervision of staff, quality control, site safety and compliance, and operating machinery and equipment where required. You will be reporting into the Commercial Manager and working alongside our project managers, site team leaders, site teams, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and co-ordinating the team as well as subcontractors and labourers
- Co-ordinating delivery receipts of materials from each job site
- Hands on leadership and supervision working alongside the team
- Maintaining a keen eye for detail, ensuring that all landscaping work meets or exceeds company quality standards
- Conducting regular inspections and quality checks and addressing any issues promptly
- Complying with VSL Landscapes’ Health and Safety Policy and legislative requirements
- Attending Health & Safety meetings and running daily PreStarts on all sites with your team members
